Inside Swiss Universities: What Makes Campus Life Unique?
When I arrived on my first Swiss campus, I didn’t know exactly what to expect. Here's what I experienced at two of Switzerland’s most renowned universities: HEC Lausanne and the University of St. Gallen (HSG).
Lakeside Views and Life at HEC Lausanne
My first impression of the University of Lausanne was that it looked like something straight out of a travel magazine. The campus stretches along Lake Geneva, offering stunning views that somehow made the stress of coursework feel a little lighter. I still remember sitting by the lake after orientation, trying to process both the beauty of the place and the excitement of starting something new.
The Rolex Learning Center, with its open and modern design, quickly became one of my favorite places to study. It’s a unique space, not just for working but also for meeting up with classmates and tackling group projects. The flowing architecture makes it feel open and collaborative, which is exactly what HEC Lausanne encourages in its students.
What made HEC stand out wasn’t just the setting but the people. The professors were approachable and involved—you could catch them for a coffee chat just as easily as in a lecture hall. Group work was a cornerstone of the learning experience, and the diversity of students meant discussions were always interesting. It wasn’t always easy, but the focus on analytical and strategic thinking pushed me to grow.
Life at Lausanne wasn’t all about academics. The city has an amazing student vibe, with plenty of pubs, clubs, and events to let off steam. I tried my hand at sailing on the lake one afternoon, and it quickly became my favorite way to recharge after a long day. The mix of academics, social life, and outdoor activities made for a well-rounded experience.
Mountains and Tradition at HSG St. Gallen
Switching to the University of St. Gallen (HSG) was a big change. If Lausanne had a laid-back lakeside vibe, St. Gallen was all about focus and ambition. Known globally for its business and economics programs, HSG has a certain intensity that hits you from the moment you arrive. One thing that struck me immediately was the university’s tradition of excellence, especially events like the St. Gallen Symposium. Attending these sessions, surrounded by some of the brightest minds in business and economics, was both inspiring and a little intimidating at first. It felt like I was in the right place to push my limits.
Outside of campus, St. Gallen’s small-town charm offered a nice counterbalance to the intensity of university life. Weekends often meant hiking in the nearby Alpstein mountains or relaxing in the cozy cafes of the old town. It wasn’t Lausanne, but it had its own unique character that I grew to appreciate.
What Swiss Campuses Taught Me
Looking back, both HEC Lausanne and HSG St. Gallen taught me far more than academics. They taught me how to balance hard work with life outside the classroom, to embrace diversity in every sense, and to take advantage of every opportunity. Swiss universities challenge you, but they also give you the tools and environment to thrive.
If you’re considering studying in Switzerland, here’s my advice: go for it. Whether it’s a quiet moment by Lake Geneva or a challenging case competition at St. Gallen, the experiences you’ll have will stay with you long after graduation. Dive into the academics, but also take the time to explore everything else—because that’s where the real memories are made.
